A binary search tree is a rooted binary tree in which the nodes are arranged in total order in which the nodes with keys greater than any particular node is stored on the right sub-trees and the ones with equal to or less than are stored on the left sub-tree satisfying the binary search property.
A Fenwick tree or binary indexed tree (BIT) is a data structure that can efficiently update elements and calculate prefix sums in a table of numbers.
To make a lookup more efficient, the tree must be balanced so that its maximum height is proportional to log(n) . In such case, the time complexity of lookup is O(log(n)) because finding any leaf is bounded by log(n) operations. But again, not every Binary Search Tree is a Balanced Binary Search Tree.
A Fenwick tree or binary indexed tree (BIT) is a data structure that can efficiently update elements and calculate prefix sums in a table of numbers.
O(log N) basically means time goes up linearly while the n goes up exponentially. So if it takes 1 second to compute 10 elements, it will take 2 seconds to compute 100 elements, 3 seconds to compute 1000 elements, and so on. It is O(log n) when we do divide and conquer type of algorithms e.g binary search.
Simply put, a binary search tree is a data structure that allows for fast insertion, removal, and lookup of items while offering an efficient way to iterate them in sorted order.
A Fenwick tree or binary indexed tree is a data structure that helps compute prefix sums efficiently. Computing prefix sums are often important in various other algorithms, not to mention several competitive programming problems. For example, they are used to implement the arithmetic coding algorithm.
Binary Indexed Tree also called Fenwick Tree provides a way to represent an array of numbers in an array, allowing prefix sums to be calculated efficiently. For example, an array is [2, 3, -1, 0, 6] the length 3 prefix [2, 3, -1] with sum 2 + 3 + -1 = 4).
BIT[] is an array of size = 1 + the size of the given array a[] on which we need to perform operations. Initially all values in BIT[] are equal to 0. Then we call update() operation for each element of given array to construct the Binary Indexed Tree.
Fenwick trees are faster and extremely simple to implement. The asymptotic bounds are equivalent, but the most basic query and update code is almost branchless, non-recursive, and uses very few operations. The segment tree versions of this can be made almost as fast, but this does take extra effort.
