A donation receipt is a detailed document that records a cash or property donation to an individual cause or organization, commonly used for tax deductions by both organizations and individual taxpayers. This video covers important information about donation receipts, including their content and where to find official templates. A donation refers to a gift of cash or property to a charitable cause, organization, or campaign, typically non-profit, and may be tax deductible. Any donations worth $250 or more must be recognized with a receipt. The charity receiving this donation must automatically provide the donor with a receipt. As a general rule a nonprofit organization should NOT place a value on what is donated (that is the responsibility of the donor).
The written acknowledgment required to substantiate a charitable contribution of $250 or more must contain the following information: name of the organization; amount of cash contribution; description (but not value) of non-cash contribution;
In-kind donation receipt. The donor, not the nonprofit, must determine the monetary value of goods donated. In-kind donation receipts should include the donor's name, the description of the gift, and the date the gift was received.
For contributions of cash, check, or other monetary gift (regardless of amount), you must maintain a record of the contribution: a bank record or a written communication from the qualified organization containing the name of the organization, the amount, and the date of the contribution.
Impact of Gifts In Kind on Tax Reporting Gifts of in-kind services are not reported on the Federal Form 990 Return of Organization Exempt Form Income Tax (Form 990). While they are included in reconciling items on Schedule D of Form 990, they are not reported as income or expense on Form 990.
Give the donor a signed receipt that includes the donor's name and signature, date of donation, description of the item or service, and the estimated value. Keep a copy of the donor's receipt for the official grantee files.
While most receipts are created for this specific purpose, technically speaking, a letter, card or an email can also be considered a receipt, as long as it states the names of the organization and the donor, the date, and the amount of the donation.
What to Include in a Donation Receipt Name of the organization; Amount of cash contribution; Description (but not value) of non-cash contribution; Statement that no goods or services were provided by the organization, if that is the case;
In the Account dialog, select Income or Revenue from the Account Type ▼ dropdown menu. From the Detail Type ▼ dropdown menu, select Non-Profit Income or Non-Profit Revenue. In the Name field, enter "In-kind donations". Select Save and Close.
When does the IRS require donation receipts? Donation tax receipts are required for any contribution of $250 or more to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This includes both cash contributions, as well as noncash gifts with an estimated value of $250 or more.
