An access control list (ACL) is an ordered set of rules that you can use to filter traffic. Each rule specifies a set of conditions that a packet must satisfy to match the rule. When the switch determines that an ACL applies to a packet, it tests the packet against the conditions of all rules.
Each ACL rule specifies: The object and operation being secured. The permissions required to access the object.
ACL Components The Name provides a descriptive identification for an ACL. The Statement is the main part of the ACL. Using statements, the user permits or denies access to an IP address or IP range. The Network protocol component allows or denies access to specific network protocols, such as IP, TCP, UDP, etc.
ACL number for the standard ACLs has to be between 1–99 and 1300–1999. Once the access list is created, it needs to be applied to an interface. You do that by using the ip access-group ACL_NUMBER in|out interface subcommand.
