What is a Linker? A linker is an important utility program that takes the object files, produced by the assembler and compiler, and other code to join them into a single executable file. There are two types of linkers, dynamic and linkage.
The -ObjC Linker Flag Passing the -ObjC option to the linker causes it to load all members of static libraries that implement any Objective-C class or category. This will pickup any category method implementations. But it can make the resulting executable larger, and may pickup unnecessary objects.
It's because Objective C has been the de facto language for Mac OS X development before it was Mac OS X. When Jobs left Apple to set up NeXT, the language Objective C was developed as a specific language that wasn't C++ and avoided many of its pitfalls.
GCC and Clang have several warning flags which will enable a collection of useful checks which we will explore in more detail below.
Compiler flags are options you give to gcc when it compiles a file or set of files. You may provide these directly on the command line, or your development tools may generate them when they invoke gcc. This section describes just the flags that are specific to Objective-C. -fconstant-string-class= ClassName.
Furthermore, Objective-C is a piece of art, creators packed genius solutions and were constantly improving it, so us developers were able to use it at our advantage. There are a lot of indicators telling us there's still a ton of legacy Objective-C code, both from Apple and from other developers, that's still in use.
The linker reads object files and combines them to create a runnable program (executable). The linker can be invoked directly ld or indirectly via gcc . When invoked via gcc , options can be passed to the linker with -Wl,option . gcc doesn't invoke the linker if it is run with the -c , -E or -S option.
Add Linker Flag Select your Xcode project in the file navigator sidebar. Select your project in the sidebar and switch to the “Build Settings” tab. Search for the “Other Linker Flags” setting. Double click the Other Linker Flags row's value area, on the right side. ... Add the ObjC linker flag by pressing the “+” button:
Linker options control linking operations. They can be placed on the command line or in a command file. Linker options must be preceded by a hyphen (-). Options can be separated from arguments (if they have them) by an optional space.
The flag tells the linker to link in the produced binary only the libraries containing symbols actually used by the binary itself. This binary can be either a final executable or another library. In theory, when linking something, only the needed libraries are passed to the command line used to invoke the linker.
