A MOBI file format (Mobipocket eBook format) is designed for eBooks, but mostly for Amazon Kindle. An AZW3 file is also designed for eBooks on the Amazon Kindle and was released alongside the Kindle Fire reader in 2011. Amazon and its Kindle platform dominate the book market. There is no comparison.
As of August 2022, you will no longer be able to send the MOBI file format to Kindles or the Kindle app using the Send to Kindle service. The MOBI file format no longer supports the newest document features, while the EPUB format is updated and accepted by Kindle devices.
You may need to convert your EPUB to an Amazon-friendly file format like MOBI (AZW3) to preview how your eBook will look on a Kindle device. You do not need to convert to MOBI to publish on Amazons vast eBook marketplace.
EPUB is the most widely accepted and functional e-book format. MOBI and AZW3 are Amazons proprietary formats used for Kindle devices. If possible, you should always leave books in the format that they came in originally. Kindle e-readers cant read EPUB files, which means you have to convert them to MOBI or AZW3.
Because AZW3 eBooks support more styles, fonts, layouts and multimedia content (except audio and video) on Kindle devices, the reading experience of AZW3 (KF8) format e-books is better than that of MOBI (KF7) format eBooks.
What Is The Difference Between EPUB VS Mobi? The main difference between EPUB and MOBI is that EPUB is widely supported across all platforms whilst MOBI is predominantly a Kindle format. The EPUB standard is maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), a global trade and standards organization.
The primary difference between MOBI and AZW is that AZW uses asterisk instead of dollar sign in the serial number scheme. Also, unlike the original MOBI format, the AZW format does not allow the use of JavaScript. E-books with extension . prc are fully compatible with the Kindle devices and can be directly read on it.
If youre using anything other than a Kindle or the Kindle app, then EPUB is the better format. The only real reason to use MOBI is for compatibility with Amazons e-reader and app, but otherwise it has no advantages over EPUB, which is a widely accepted format that is much easier to work with.
