- [Tutor] A Pap test is a test to screen for cervical cancer or other cervical diseases. Your cervix is the lower part of the uterus at the top of your vagina. A Pap test is used to check your cervix for abnormal cells. Abnormal cells can sometimes turn into cervical cancer if they arent treated. A Pap test can be part of a pelvic exam. First, your healthcare provider will place an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum will be opened so that your cervix can be seen. Next, your provider will use a scraper or brush to gently collect cells from your cervix. Your cells will be examined at a lab under a microscope to see if any of them are abnormal. It usually takes about one to three weeks to get your test results. If you have questions about this test or your test results, talk to your provider.

Cell types This is called the endocervix. The skin-like cells of the ectocervix can become cancerous, leading to a squamous cell cervical cancer. This is the most common type of cervical cancer. The glandular cells of the endocervix can also become cancerous, leading to an adenocarcinoma of the cervix.
High-grade SIL - means there are a large number of precancerous cells, and, like low-grade SIL, these precancerous changes involve only cells on the surface of the cervix. The cells often do not become cancerous for many months, perhaps years.
Inflammation. If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
Inflammation on a Pap smear can be found in a patient of any age and may be attributable to a benign infection—such as Candida vaginitis—that need be treated only if the patient is symptomatic. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause an inflammatory reaction on the cervix and should be treated ingly.
Cervical cancer usually develops over 10 or more years. There can be a long interval between being infected with HPV, the development of abnormal cells on the cervix and the development of cervical cancer.
Atypical endocervical cells (AEC) of undetermined significance is an uncommon cervical cytology finding, being reported in less than 1% of Pap smear tests. 1 Atypical endocervical cells are reported when the medical scientist/pathologist is confident that the affected cells are endocervical.
High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions (HSIL) means there are moderately or severely abnormal cervical cells that could become cancer in the future if not treated. Some lesions may be called precancer. Your health care provider will likely ask you to come back for a colposcopy, as explained on page 10.
If your Pap test is abnormal, this means that your sample contained abnormally shaped cervical cells. Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common.
Mild inflammation was defined as less than 30 inflammatory cells/high-power field; moderate inflammation was defined as 30 to 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field; and severe inflammation was defined as more than 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field.
High-grade squamous lesions (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia [CIN] 2 or 3) have a high risk of persisting or developing into cervical cancer over a period of years. If you are age 25 and older and not pregnant, CIN 2 or 3 is treated by removing or destroying the abnormal area.
