Most patent applications include at least several sheets of drawings, with multiple views on each sheet. If your invention is a physical object, your drawings should include views of the object from each angle and perspectivetop, bottom, front, back and sides.
For all intents and purposes, patent drawings, sometimes called patent illustrations, are virtually always required, and even when they are not required, including them is a good way to strengthen your application.
Patent Drawing Rules: Latest USPTO Guidelines Use only black and white colors. You must use India ink only. The scale of the drawing must be 2/3 the size of the reduced illustration. Also, the drawing must include application number, Inventors name, Inventions name, and identification.
A drawing/diagram is a vital factor in the patent application for a better understanding of the invention by a common man. Patent law also mandates the requirement for drawings in a patent application, which makes it advantageous to convince the examiner and to expedite the whole process.
All sheets of drawings must be numbered in the center of either the top or the bottom of each sheet but not in the margin in numbers larger than those used as reference signs in order to avoid confusion with the latter.
The title of the invention should be placed at the top of the first page of the specification unless it is provided in the application data sheet (see 37 CFR 1.76). The title should be brief but technically accurate and descriptive and should contain fewer than 500 characters.
Reference numbers are used by employing a set of numbers to distinguish each element described in the detailed description section of the specification and the drawings, i.e. for each element one specific and different number is chosen and the same number is used to label that element in the associated drawings.
The drawing must have an appropriate title that clearly satisfies the purpose of the drawing. It must have the name of the inventor, application number, or docket number (if provided) on the front of each sheet and centered within the top margin.
