As far as possible always try to put Xrefs on a separate layer dedicated to only Xrefs and also ensure that the layer is not layer 0. In this way, you can control properties of X-refs in a better way and also it becomes easier to manage these external references in drawings where they are inserted.
Attach an Xref Click Insert tab Reference panel Attach. Find. In the Select Reference File dialog box, select one or more files you want to attach and then click Open. In the Attach External Reference dialog box, under Reference Type, select Attachment. Specify the insertion point, scale, and rotation angle. Click OK.
As the name indicates, the xref feature allows you to attach external references to your drawing. External references can be in the format of other drawings, PDFs, images, point cloud data, and so on. The xref feature works as a sort of overlay on your drawings; it isnt a part of your drawing.
Perhaps the most common format to Xref is another DWG file. (As you likely know, DWG is the file format of CAD drawings.) To begin working with Xrefs, type Xref in the Command line and press Enter to open the Xref Manager (pictured to the right).
Link to Other Files In a new drawing, create a rectangle. On the Insert tab, Data panel, click Hyperlink and select the rectangle. In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click File. Then, browse to a file. Click OK and then test your hyperlink to the file. Create a PDF of the drawing with the EXPORTPDF command.
To Bind an Xref to the Current Drawing Click Insert tab Reference panel Dialog box launcher. Find. In the External References palette, select the reference name that you want to bind. Right-click, and click Bind. In the Bind Xrefs dialog box, select one of the following options: Click OK to close each dialog box.
Insert vs. Bind Xrefs: Bind converts the objects in the xref into a block reference. Named object definitions are added to the current drawing with a prefix of blockname $n$, where n is a number starting at 0. Insert Xrefs: Insert also converts the objects in the xref into a block reference.
Xrefs are drawings that are externally linked to a drawing. As the Xref changes it updates in all the drawings it is attached to. An Xref is really just a block that the definition resides in an external drawing opposed to locally within the host drawing. Many aspects of blocks are identical to an xref.
