This video introduces XPS, which is analyzed through software to quantify and determine chemical state information from spectra gathered from samples. To understand the software analysis, knowledge of the XPS technique is essential, including energy spectra and acquisition methods. XPS spectrum is an energy spectrum acquired by changing energy to sample electron arrival, resulting in intensity plotted against binding energy related to atom's electronic configuration.

The information XPS provides about surface layers or thin film structures is important for many industrial and research applications where surface or thin film composition plays a critical role in performance including: nanomaterials, photovoltaics, catalysis, corrosion, adhesion, electronic devices and packaging,
Basic principles of XPS Why is this a surface technique? So the excited photoelectrons are relatively slow and mostly interact with the material they are generated and lose energy. A few electrons get out un-scattered and are detected as the photoelectron peaks. (mostly from the upper 10 nm of the material.)
XPS Sample Preparation: Press the powder into clean, high purity indium foil. Dissolve the powder in a suitable solvent and then drop cast onto the surface of a clean silicon wafer. Sprinkle the powder onto the surface of sticky carbon conductive tape or pressed into a tablet for analysis.
Among them, hydrogen cannot be detected by XPS because it has no core electrons.
The most prevalent electron spectrometer for XPS is the hemispherical electron analyzer. They have high energy resolution and spatial selection of the emitted electrons.
Basically, two different x ray sources are used in xps to distinguish Auger peaks from photo electron peaks. An Auger peak represents the kinetic energy of an auger electron which changes with the energy of primary xrays.
How to Analyze XPS Spectra Data The X-Axis: Peak Position. The Y-Axis: Peak Intensity. Overlapping Peaks. More than One Elemental Peak. Analysis of Haze on a Polyimide Substrate. Passivation Integrity of Stainless Steel.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
XPS involves the bombardment of a sample surface with X-rays and measurement of the intensity of photoelectrons and Auger electrons emitted from that surface as a function of their energy. As a technique, XPS can in principle provide not just elemental analysis but also chemical information.
A further source for structure in an XPS spectrum is that of two intrinsic energy loss processes. So called, Shake-up peaks appear at energies characteristic of the excited states for an element with respect to the state measured by the zero loss intensity.
