Hi. Its Mr. Andersen and in this video Im going to talk about genetic recombination and gene mapping. And it centers on the work of Thomas Hunt Morgan who used fruit flies to show that genes just dont travel by themselves. They actually travel on chromosomes. And as those chromosomes undergo whats called crossing over, genes from one chromosome are actually going to swap position with genes from another chromosome. And so before we get to that we should talk about fruit fly genetics for just a second. And so on the left we have a wild fruit fly. Thats what they normally look like. And on the right is a mutant. There are two mutations in the one the right. Now only coloration, but you can see that it also has these really small what are called vestigial wings. And so if we look at the genotypes, the one on the right is little b little b. So it has that black coloration. The one on the left we simply add a plus to it. And that implies that its of the wild type. We could also loo

Like most surgeries, corneal cross-linking can sometimes cause problems, such as: An eye infection. Eye pain or swelling. Damage to the cornea or epithelium.
Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is not a cure for keratoconus, but it can help prevent the condition from getting worse. CXL is intended to prevent steepening or progression of the keratoconus process to potentially avoid needing a corneal transplant.
Epithelium-on cross-linking is generally not covered by insurance. This is primarily because this variant of the procedure is not FDA approved, making the procedure an off-label use of the relevant medications and procedures.
Patients of any age may be considered as a candidate for corneal crosslinking to treat keratoconus. Patients 8 years old and over can have very good results with this treatment. Making the diagnosis as early as possible is important, and this typically requires corneal topography or tomography.
Everyones experience of pain is different, with some patients reporting very little discomfort and others describing the first few days as very painful. Your eyes could be light sensitive and many patients find sunglasses helpful. Some patients prefer to keep their eyes closed for a few days following the treatment.
How long does the procedure take? If two eyes are being treated at once, the procedure takes approximately an hour and a half. If only one eye is being treated at a time, the procedure takes approximately one hour.
Corneal cross linking is a minimally invasive procedure that uses ultraviolet light and eye drops in order to strengthen the collagen fibers in the cornea. The procedure is used for patients with keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea grows thin and weak.
Cross-Linking Recovery The treated eye is usually painful for 3 to 5 days, however levels of discomfort vary from patient to patient. Recovery time is about one week although most patients may find that it may be slightly longer.
In corneal cross-linking, doctors use eyedrop medication and ultraviolet (UV) light from a special machine to make the tissues in your cornea stronger. The goal is to keep the cornea from bulging more. Its called cross-linking because it adds bonds between the collagen fibers in your eye.
To begin your Corneal Cross-Linking therapy, you will be given a relaxing medication and anesthetic drops to numb the treatment area. This is to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the process since you will be awake.
