The pockets and vents (i.e. back tail) are often sewn closed on new mens suits to help the garment keep its shape while in the store or otherwise prior to a sale. And when you take it home, or just prior to leaving the store, just have the salesperson or clothier remove the stitching for you.
No matter how much you love the brand that made your tailored suit, the label stitched onto the cuff should never remain intact. Its simply there as an ID-ing method for warehouse workers or shop staff looking to locate a certain size. Take it off carefully with a small pair of scissors or a seam ripper.
One of the most common mistakes, and the most obvious, is when men dont cut the vent threads on their jacket. The vent is the flap of fabric at the back, or sometimes a slit up the middle depending on whether its British or Italian tailoring, and is usually sewn shut on new suits.
So, whats up with those stitches? They fasten the jackets vent (that flap on the back) to keep it from getting wrinkled while it ships to a store and then sits on a rack, waiting for you to take it home. The stitches help secure the fabric so it doesnt get bent out of shape.
A vent is a vertical slit rising from the bottom hem of a jacket or a skirt, generally to allow for ease of movement.
For example, the flap on the back of a jacket can help protect the lower back from cold, wind, or rain. Style: Flaps can also be used for aesthetic purposes, adding visual interest or creating a unique look.
A lapel (/ləˈpɛl/ lə-PEL) is a folded flap of cloth on the front of a jacket or coat below the collar. It is most commonly found on formal clothing and suit jackets.
