Examples of cross-linked polymers include: Polyester fiberglass, polyurethanes used as coatings, adhesives, vulcanized rubber, epoxy resins and many more.
Crosslinking is the process of chemically joining two or more molecules by a covalent bond. Crosslinking reagents (or crosslinkers) are molecules that contain two or more reactive ends capable of chemically attaching to specific functional groups (primary amines, sulfhydryls, etc.) on proteins or other molecules.
Vulcanization is an example of cross-linking. Schematic presentation of two polymer chains (blue and green) cross-linked after the vulcanization of natural rubber with sulfur (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, ).
These reactions make the molecules stable enough to allow for intensive scientific analysis. There are three different types of crosslinkers homobifunctional, heterobifunctional, and photoreactive crosslinking reagents.
Crosslinking is the method by which one polymer chain is connected to another, typically by a covalent or ionic bond. These links exist in nature (for example, between proteins in the human body) but can also be deployed in coating engineering processes.
For example, cross‐links are associated with the loss of elasticity in skin and muscle tissue, stiffening of blood vessel walls, changes in the lens of the eye, delayed wound healing, and reduced joint mobility in aging individuals.
For example, the chemical cross-linking reaction of collagen using EDC/NHS occurs as a result of the formation of a covalent bond between the carboxyl groups of aspartic acid and glutamic acid.
Common cross-linkers are borate (high pH and moderate temperatures) and zirconate (low pH and high temperatures). Fig. 8.4 illustrates how cross-linkers link multiple molecules together.
