hello and welcome to this video in todays class I will be talking to you about the kama link also known as the comma splice it is a very common error in writing the kama linger come a splice is when we join two independent clauses by a comma alone so they are two sentences joined by a comma a comma cannot join two independent clauses its itself it would need either a conjunction in a comma or a semicolon or to be separated into two sentences I have three examples here written on the board and I will be explaining to you one by one the first one says John came back from England three days ago he was very happy to see his daughter so as you can see here we have two independent clauses or two principal clauses we have two independent sentences also because they are very full this is a very very long sentence so John came back from England three days ago we could just take this away and we could add a semicolon he was very happy to see his daughter or you could also add a period capitaliz

Rule: Use a comma between two independent clauses when conjunctions such as and, or, but, for, nor connect them. Example: I have painted the entire house, but she is still working on sanding the floors.
It is used to join two complete sentences into a single sentence, and it must be followed by a suitable connecting word. The connecting words which can be used in this way are and, or, but, while and yet.
If linking words start a sentence, they are followed by a comma. When they are used to connect two clauses, a semi-colon is placed at the end of the first clause. A comma is often used after the linking word(s).
The seven coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. It helps to remember them as the FANBOYS. If any of these seven words are connecting independent clauses, they must have a comma before them.
Use commas to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses written in a series. Use commas to separate two or more coordinate adjectives that describe the same noun. Be sure never to add an extra comma between the final adjective and the noun itself or to use commas with non-coordinate adjectives.
