Initial brand split. In 2002, the then-World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) introduced the brand extension, splitting its roster into two brands, Raw and SmackDown, represented by the shows of the same name where their talent would exclusively perform.
Why did WWE create RAW and SmackDown separately. ing to Worlds Strongest Man Mark Henry, the WWE roster had too many talents for one show and a lot of wrestlers were left unused in the process. Thus, WWE decided to create two separate brands - RAW and SmackDown.
Raw was the home brand for many top WWE stars including Triple H, Ric Flair, Batista, Randy Orton, Chris Benoit, Goldberg, Booker T, Chris Jericho, Christian, Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Kane, Trish Stratus, Lita and Stacy Keibler.
WWE currently promotes three brands. The two main brands, referred to as the main roster, are Raw and SmackDown. Established in 2010, NXT serves as the promotions developmental brand.
Ultimately, the Brand Extension wound up running its course in 2011. Since then, the storylines from each brand have spilled over to the others show, and there really is no exclusive wrestler for either show. Overall, fans never got a true reason from the WWE as to why the Brand Extension ended.
In 2011, WWE ended the original brand split. With SmackDown moving to Tuesdays and to a live broadcast starting July 19, 2016, WWE reintroduced the brand split with a draft held that same episode.
It sounds like WWEs increasingly loose brand split is set to stay in its current state for the time being. Fightful Select notes that there are no plans for recent crossovers featuring Raw and SmackDown stars invading the opposite show to slow down, particularly when it comes to The Bloodline.
While those are all reasons for fans to lose interest, the end of the brand split is perhaps the biggest problem that WWE has inflicted on itself in years. Because the company lacked patience, and because they failed to build up enough stars over the past decade, they decided to merge the brands.
