The Send to Kindle system will automatically convert EPUB files to the Kindle's proprietary ebook format.
Different formats are suitable for different uses. It's a matter of using what's most appropriate for your needs. MOBI is best for Amazon platforms, EPUB is a general use format, and PDF is best for print. Keep all three in mind when you find yourself downloading an ebook.
A MOBI file format (Mobipocket eBook format) is designed for eBooks, but mostly for Amazon Kindle. An AZW3 file is also designed for eBooks on the Amazon Kindle and was released alongside the Kindle Fire reader in 2011. Amazon and its Kindle platform dominate the book market.
Amazon's marketplace — Kindle Direct Publishing — accepts many file formats, including EPUBs, then converts them to the latest version of MOBI (AZW3).
Starting August 1, 2021, we will no longer support MOBI files for reflowable eBooks. Use EPUB, DOCX or KPF to publish new or update reflowable eBooks.
What Book Format Should You Use: EPUB, PDF, or MOBI/AZW3? In almost every case, you should start by using the EPUB file format for your book. Even if you plan to distribute your eBook on the Amazon marketplace, you should use the EPUB file, as this is what Amazon recommends and accepts.
Recently, it seems that Amazon is ensuring the death of the MOBI file. Over the last two years, as of this writing, Amazon and Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has slowly phased out the MOBI file in favor of the EPUB file for ebooks. Starting from 2022, there is no longer any reason why you would ever need a MOBI file…
We support fixed format books in MOBI that meet the specifications outlined in the Kindle Publishing Guidelines. For reflowable eBooks, upload a EPUB, DOCX, or KPF file instead.
Turn your Kindle on. Connect the Kindle to your computer using the USB cable that came with your Kindle. Drag and drop the “. mobi” Ebook file into the documents folder on your Kindle.
Starting August 1, 2021, we will no longer support MOBI files for reflowable eBooks. Use EPUB, DOCX or KPF to publish new or update reflowable eBooks.
