Hi. Its Mr. Andersen and in this video Im going to talk about genetic recombination and gene mapping. And it centers on the work of Thomas Hunt Morgan who used fruit flies to show that genes just dont travel by themselves. They actually travel on chromosomes. And as those chromosomes undergo whats called crossing over, genes from one chromosome are actually going to swap position with genes from another chromosome. And so before we get to that we should talk about fruit fly genetics for just a second. And so on the left we have a wild fruit fly. Thats what they normally look like. And on the right is a mutant. There are two mutations in the one the right. Now only coloration, but you can see that it also has these really small what are called vestigial wings. And so if we look at the genotypes, the one on the right is little b little b. So it has that black coloration. The one on the left we simply add a plus to it. And that implies that its of the wild type. We could also loo

The position is usually designated by two digits (representing a region and a band), which are sometimes followed by a decimal point and one or more additional digits (representing sub-bands within a light or dark area). The number indicating the gene position increases with distance from the centromere.
Linked genes are genes that are likely to be inherited together because they are physically close to one another on the same chromosome. During meiosis, chromosomes are recombined, resulting in gene swaps between homologous chromosomes.
A test cross is done between a dominant phenotype and a recessive phenotype to estimate the zygosity of the dominant phenotype. A two-point test cross is done to calculate the recombination frequency of two linked genes. It is useful for determining the frequency of gametes produced.
The two or more genes are said to be linked when they are located on the same chromosome and cannot segregate independently as they are inherited together.
The typical example of the test cross is the origin experiment Mendel conducted himself, to determine the genotype of a yellow pea. As seen in the image below, the alleles Y and y are used for the yellow and green versions of the allele, respectively. The yellow allele, Y, is dominant over the y allele.
Human beings have 22 pairs of chromosomes that look identical, also known as autosomes. The pairs of chromosomes are sorted ing to what parts of the genetic information they have, and then numbered from 1 to 22. Every cell nucleus has another pair of chromosomes too: the two sex chromosomes.
Linked genes: Some genes are located very closely together on the same chromosome and are considered linked. In these cases, independent assortment of alleles isn't quite as independent—instead, alleles from the two linked genes will segregate as a set and go to the same gamete.
The genes on each chromosome are arranged in a particular sequence, and each gene has a particular location on the chromosome (called its locus). In addition to DNA, chromosomes contain other chemical components that influence gene function.
By solving a three point cross you can determine two important things: order of the genes on a chromosome. determine the distance (in map units) between each pair of genes. The genotype of the organism must be heterozygous at all loci that will be used for the cross.
define linked genes. genes located near each other on the same chromosome than tend to be inherited together in genetic crosses; such genes are said to be genetically linked.
