If you're age 65 or older, you might be concerned about the health risks of donating blood. It's a common myth that seniors are “too old” to donate blood. But as long as you meet the eligibility requirements, there is no upper age limit on blood donation.
We require all of our volunteer blood donors to be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. However, some people may be temporarily or permanently deferred from donating blood. Some reasons for permanent or temporary deferrals are listed below.
That is because blood volume is in proportion to body weight. People who weigh less than this, like children, may not tolerate the amount of blood removal that is required for a donation. This means that it is not safe for a child to donate blood; they need it in their bodies.
