The estimated tax penalty is a penalty for not paying your taxes in full throughout the year. So if you have a tax due of more than 10% of your tax liability, you will have a penalty.
The tax assessment summary on your notice lists the main lines on your assessed or reassessed tax return. Beside each line, you can see the amounts we used to calculate your balance on this return. You can compare these amounts to the ones on your return to see where we made changes, if any.
Line 23 of Form 1040 brings in Other Taxes from Part II of Schedule 2, including self-employment tax, the additional tax on tax-favored accounts (10% early withdrawal penalty), the 3.8% Medicare surtax on net investment income from Form 8960 and the 0.9% Medicare surtax on wages from Form 8959.
Your net income is used to calculate federal and provincial or territorial non-refundable tax credits.
Line 23600 is used in the calculation of adjusted family net income.
If there is an Estimated Tax Penalty amount on line 38, that amount is deducted as part of the calculation.
Discovering an error on your tax return is one thing, but informing the IRS about it is another. To do so, youll want to docHub out to the specific department responsible for address corrections at the IRS (call 1-800-829-1040). Once youve initiated the correction, its wise to keep track of whats happening.
The IRS instructions say that you should use your home address, or the address at which you receive mail. Quite frankly, it doesnt really matter to them, so long as you can receive mail there reliably.
