The Answer; A Single Line of Text field can contain up to 4,000 characters. A Multiple Lines of Text field can contain up to 1,048,576 characters.
Any length from 256 to 131,072 characters is allowed. The default is 32,768 characters. Every time you press Enter within a long text area field, a line break, and a return character are added to the text. These two characters count toward the 131,072 character limit.
The maximum size of a custom field file cannot exceed 500 KB. The title you provide to a custom field cannot exceed 256 characters.
The character limit for field-level help text was recently expanded from 255 to 510 allowing you to provide more detailed help information. This increase applies to standard and custom fields on detail and edit pages. As of Spring 21, the character limit for field-level help text is increased from 255 to 510.
With Salesforce Essentials you get up to 100 custom fields per object. If you are looking to increase the limit, you would want to upgrade your Salesforce Edition. Note that you cannot create custom fields in Activity, Tasks and Events in Essentials Edition.
There is a 900 maximum hard limit on the total custom fields per object allowed. In addition to the limits listed above, you can fields from the AppExchange for a total of 900 custom fields.
