The table-layout property defines the algorithm used to lay out table cells, rows, and columns. Tip: The main benefit of table-layout: fixed; is that the table renders much faster. On large tables, users will not see any part of the table until the browser has rendered the whole table.
Layout tables lack flexibility to accommodate end-user content adjustments, primarily text sizing by users with low vision. If text within a pixel-sized table cell is enlarged by the end user, this can cause readability issues, especially if the text can no longer fit within the pixel dimensions defined.
To check the accessibility of your tables, try navigating all the way through using only the Tab key. If you can navigate through the table this way - cell by cell and row by row - a screen reader should have no trouble with it. Next, consider the use of a designated header row for your table.
Accessible alternatives to tables When people scan pages they are far more likely to read structured bulleted lists than paragraphs of text or complicated tables. Content in bulleted lists are also very good for screen readers.
A layout table is a table used to provide some sort of visual structure to a page, sometimes people want to design columns on a page, some people find using layout tables easier for Forms, etc. When you use a table for anything but providing data, you are using a table for layout.
If the table has an accessible name, a screen reader will provide that name to the user. If not, the screen reader may only read the number of rows and columns.
Screen readers will read the content of a table in a linear fashion left to right, top to bottom. Complex tables that include nested tables or that require two rows in order to explain the information contained in the columns, are more difficult to tag for accessibility.
Under the fixed layout method, the entire table can be rendered once the first table row has been downloaded and analyzed. This can speed up rendering time over the automatic layout method, but subsequent cell content might not fit in the column widths provided.
If the table has an accessible name, a screen reader will provide that name to the user. If not, the screen reader may only read the number of rows and columns.
Data tables containing data where rows and columns have meaning (e.g. the columns in the Periodic Table of Elements describe fundamental properties of matter) Layout tables where the content could be presented in other ways with no loss of information (e.g. a grid of product images on an online store)
