Licence summary You must be 18 years or older to make the application which must include a description of the premises, an operating plan, a layout plan of the premises, and certificates for planning, building standards and, if relevant, food hygiene.
Applications for premises licences must be made to the licensing authority within whose area your premises is situated. This will normally be your local authority. Application forms can be obtained from GOV.UK or Home Office websites or, on request, from your licensing authority.
There are three main types of licence under the Licensing Act 2003 - Premises Licences, Club Premises Certificates and Personal Licences.
To apply for a licence, you will need to complete an application form and send it to your local council, along with the fee. You may also need to send copies of your form (depending on the type of application you are making) to the police and other responsible authorities.
A Premises Licence is a permanent licence, granted in respect of a specific location, that authorises the licence holder to carry out a combination of licensable activities. Licensable activities include: the sale by retail of alcohol. the supply of alcohol by a club to club members and guests.
