On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. In the Label list, select the label that best describes the object, such as a figure or equation. If the list doesnt provide the label you want, click New Label, type the new label in the Label box, and then click OK.
\tag{label} where label can be any text or symbol. Note, for most symbol mathmode is required, for example: \tag{$\star$} . Here the label would be typeset within parentheses.
To reference a LaTeX table or equation in LaTeX you need to make sure that you insert a label in your table or equation and that such label has a tab: prefix for tables and a eqn: prefix for equations.
Open your document and select your first equation. On the References tab, click Insert Caption from the Captions section of the ribbon. In the Caption pop-up window, select Equation next to Label. This sets both the word and the number as the caption.
To reference a LaTeX table or equation in LaTeX you need to make sure that you insert a label in your table or equation and that such label has a tab: prefix for tables and a eqn: prefix for equations.
Numbering The equation numbers should be enclosed by parentheses and placed at the right-hand side of the page. If you are referring to an equation in the text, use eq. (3) (or other abbreviations). If it is the first word in a sentence, capitalize it, i.e., Eq. (3).
Equations are centered on the page and labeled with Arabic numerals, right-aligned, in parentheses, and referred to only by those numbers in the text e.g., you should always say as seen in (3) rather than as seen in Equation (3).
If you want to refer to a numbered equation, you can put a \label{ } command between the \begin{equation} and the \end{equation} . Then the key will be associated with the number of the equation, and you can reference the equation by typing, for example, as we see from (\ref{eqnkey}).
