Under the Healthy Workplace, Healthy Family Act of 2014, most California companies must provide employees with at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, or a minimum of three days of sick leave annually. Unused sick leave can be carried over to the next year, with a maximum cap of six days. However, independent contractors, workers under collective bargaining agreements, and employees of air carriers or California's in-home supportive services are generally not entitled to this benefit. Paid sick leave can be used for personal health-related needs, including treatment, diagnosis, preventative care, and for reasons related to domestic violence, as well as to care for a family member. Employers cannot deny an employee the right to paid sick leave.
