While theres no set age, most parents dont feel comfortable leaving their baby until after the first four to nine months. Before that, a lot is going on with your baby as they learn their daily routine. You may still be perfecting breastfeeding or working on the bond between you or your partner and the baby.
Shared parenting is increasingly common in the U.K. It gives each parent at least 40 percent of their childs time. One shared-parenting option, the 2-2-5-5 schedule, has your child spend two days with each parent, followed by five days with each parent. This creates a 50/50 division of parenting time.
Your custody schedule should give your toddler frequent contact with both parents and provide both parents opportunities to feed, bathe, play with, read to, arrange playdates for, and put the toddler to sleep. Toddlers can be away from either parent for 2 or 3 days.
Common joint physical custody schedules Some common shared parenting time schedules are: Alternating weeks schedule when the child lives with one parent for one week and the other parent the next week. Two weeks each schedule when the child lives with one parent for two weeks and the other parent the next two weeks.
By the age of two years, a monthly overnight stay might be possible, encouraged and supported by each parent and carefully monitored for any distress to the child, and leading to more frequent overnight stays during the latter part of this period.
For a 3-6 year old, about 2-3 days a week at the maximum, and thats probably stretching it.
However, a mother cannot stop a father from seeing his child unless she has a valid reason to do so. If the mother feels that it is not in the childs best interests to see their father because of safety or welfare reasons, then a court order may be made to prevent the father from having access to his children.
Between 4 and 9 months is the overnighter sweet spot. Before that, your baby may still be perfecting breastfeeding, waking up a lot at night, and bonding with parents, which makes it a less-than-ideal (but not impossible) time to leave them with a sitter overnight.
