Nroff, or new roff, is a Unix OS text-formatting program that produces output for terminal windows and fixed-width printers. It is used to format manual pages and is an integral Unix help system component.
The nroff and troff commands format text for printing by interspersing the text with control sequences. Control sequences are either control line requests or escape requests that control text processing by the printing device.
To add an additional directory of man pages, you can set the $MANPATH environment variable. Prefix $MANPATH with a : to have it added to the list of already-configured man paths....The general process is like this: Create a text file with markup. Pass it through a sed script to format it for nroff. Pass it through nroff.

The default format of man pages is troff, with either the macro package man (appearance oriented) or mdoc (semantic oriented). This makes it possible to typeset a man page into PostScript, PDF, and various other formats for viewing or printing.
The man pages are stored in /usr/share/man.
In unix like operating systems such as linux, man is an interface to view the system's reference manual. A user can request to display a man page by simply typing man followed by a space and then argument.
troff features commands to designate fonts, spacing, paragraphs, margins, footnotes and more. Unlike many other text formatters, troff can position characters arbitrarily on a page, even overlapping them, and has a fully programmable input language.
