You should solder most flat metals, such as copper and tin, with a rosin-core solder. Use acid-core solder only on galvanized iron and other hard-to-solder metals.
Tins heyday ended in the mid-20th century, however, when Coors Brewery introduced the first aluminum can. Cheaper, lighter and recyclable, aluminum rapidly overtook tin and steel.
How Are Tin Alloys Used Today? Common modern alloys which tin is a docHub component of include pewter and solder. Pewter is used to make tableware, trays, decorative ornaments and other household items. Solder is used to create a permanent bond between metal pieces, like wires in a circuit board.
Aluminum was lighter and cheaper to make than tin. It could be made in vast amounts and make hard in some applications. In the 1960s almost all automatic transmissions for automobiles, were case out of aluminium as well as aircraft parts to specifications.
Use a soldering iron to connect tin cans together rather than welding. Welding a tin can is not possible, but brazing it together will work. A tin can is either made from aluminum or steel with a tin coating (plating) on the outside. The metal is very thin and does not withstand the heat from welding.
Tin can form a bond with carbon, as in the more than 500 known organotin compounds. Organotin stabilizers are used to prevent changes in polyvinyl chloride upon exposure to light and heat. A number of organotin compounds are major ingredients in biocides and fungicides.
Aluminum foil outperformed tin foil in cost, efficiency, durability, and conductivity, becoming a popular substitute in the following decades. Wartime rations on tin rendered aluminum the standard for packaging, and after World War II aluminum foil completely superseded tin.
