What do colleges look for in a letter of recommendation? Colleges and universities often look for a students strengths, personal qualities, achievements theyve made and whether they come personally recommended by a trusted educator, mentor or employer.
Include key information. After you have written a greeting, you may include your name and position, your relationship with the student, any academic achievements and technical skills, personal qualities and soft skills, a formal recommendation statement and your contact information for further questions.
The letter of recommendation should give a picture of the candidates personal characteristics, performance and experience, strengths, capabilities, and professional promise from someone who has worked closely with the candidate. The selection committee relies on these letters to assist in making a final decision.
How to Write (Format) A recommendation letter should fill an entire page (usually 400 500 words) and contain an introduction, two (2) body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The student should be described in a way that highlights both their academic skills and personal qualities.
What to Include in a Letter of Recommendation Salutation of one line. One paragraph detailing how you know the person and why you are qualified. One paragraph explaining why you recommend the person and details on what theyve done or accomplished. One summary reinforcing that you highly recommend the person.
A great letter of recommendation includes specific examples and anecdotes that demonstrate the applicants skills and qualifications. It backs up descriptions of your qualifications with examples. You want your letters of recommendation to demonstrate that you not only possess good qualities but also apply them.
Some will write the majority of the letter and insert a paragraph or two from the collaborator; some will use we throughout the letter to comment on their collective work with you; some will designate different collaborators ideas by using their names or initials to clarify what comes from which source.
Admissions officers want to learn about your personal qualities and strengths from your recommenders. These personal qualities could include integrity, caring for others, thoughtfulness, humor, and passion. Two traits they especially value are demonstrated leadership and strength of character.
