Use a semicolon to join two related independent clauses in place of a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet). Make sure when you use the semicolon that the connection between the two independent clauses is clear without the coordinating conjunction.
Three methods of forming compound sentences with a coordinating conjunction (one of the fanboys); with a semicolon; or. with a semicolon and a transitional expression.
A semicolon can be used to connect two closely related independent clauses (parts of a sentence that could also stand as separate sentences). My car broke down this morning; it's being fixed at the mechanic's garage now.
Commas alone cannot join two complete sentences. However, a comma combined with a coordinating conjunction can join two complete ideas of equal weight and importance.
Rule. Use a semicolon between closely related independent clauses which are not joined by a coordinating conjunction. This rule means that semicolons are used between two complete sentences which are not already linked by words like and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet.
You may have to introduce conflicting ideas - bridging words and phrases are especially good for this: Conversely... Despite this... However... On the contrary... Now let's consider... Even so... Nonetheless... We can't ignore...
A semicolon is most commonly used to link (in a single sentence) two independent clauses that are closely related in thought. When a semicolon is used to join two or more ideas (parts) in a sentence, those ideas are then given equal position or rank.
Conjunctions are linking words like and, or, but, then and because. The two main types of conjunctions are coordinating (words such as and and but) and subordinating. Subordinating conjunctions (e.g. because, if, when, in order to) link a subordinate clause to a main clause.
We use a gapping comma to show that one or more words have been left out when the missing words would simply repeat the words already used earlier in the same sentence.
Here are the rules for using semicolons correctly; we hope you're taking notes. 1 Semicolons connect related independent clauses. ... 2 Delete the conjunction when you use a semicolon between two independent clauses. ... 3 Use semicolons in a serial list. ... 4 Use semicolons with conjunctive adverbs. ... 5 Use a semicolon to give a wink.
