Delta Force operators can be vastly diversified in their training background since they can come from various units across different military branches (including DEVGRU).
As a civilian, you can request to join the SEALs before enlisting through the SEAL challenge contract (seaman to SEAL program). The SEAL challenge contract guarantees you the opportunity to become a SEAL candidate and entitles you to certain bonuses and benefits when you enlist.
Delta Force is an Army outfit that primarily selects candidates from within their own special forces and infantry units. However, they will also select candidates from all branches of service, including the National Guard and Coast Guard.
You can apply to become a Navy SEAL as a civilian, a Navy sailor or even as a service member from another military branch. Both new recruits and active-duty military candidates must pass a battery of physical, technical and psychological exams.
12+ months of initial training that includes Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL BUD/S School, Parachute Jump School and SEAL Qualification Training (SQT) 18 months of pre-deployment training and intensive specialized training.
SEAL basic training has earned a grueling reputation, in part because of a notoriously high failure rate. Nearly 70% of enlisted SEALs fail, mostly by hell week. But Naval Academy officers have an 89% success rate, mainly because they go through years of training and evaluation before they arrive.
The SEAL teams have faced criticism for decades, both from outsiders and their own Navy leadership, that their selection course, known as Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training or BUD/S, is too difficult, too brutal, and too often causes concussions, broken bones, dangerous infections and near-drownings.
It is extremely difficult to become a Navy Seal. During this program, students overcome obstacles designed to test their stamina, teamwork, and leadership. For every 1,000 people who start Navy Seal training, only around 200 to 250 succeed. To even just qualify for the Navy Seal training program is difficult.
Entering training to become a Navy SEAL is voluntary. Anyone can volunteer, and officers and enlisted servicepeople train side by side. (Women are now allowed to join but as of 2021, none have successfully finished SEAL training.)
