Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image (Exodus 20:6).
Though it was acknowledged that idols were built by human hands, the gods, or at least portions of their power, were still believed to indwell them. It is notable that when the Bible refers to these graven images, now usually translated as idols, it is specifically referring to objects of worship.
Further, Genesis 1:27 tells us that God created us male and female. In His infinite wisdom, God put man to sleep and, instead of making an identical partner, God chose to make a woman. The relationship between male and female beautifully points to something in the Godhead and reflects our need for community.
Isa. 44. [9] They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
There are also diverse images of God and Jesus in the New Testament. The parables of the Good Shepherd (John 10:1-19) or the Loving Father/Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32) show a forgiving God while Jesus parable about the Last Judgment (Matthew 25:31-46) presents the tough challenge to serve Christ in the needs of others.
Ephesians 2:10 reads For we are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. But doesnt that contradict what comes two verses earlier: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithand this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.
