Dear friends and followers today Ill be answering another great question which was sent in by one of my YouTube subscribers Joe Ive heard pilots talking about Flex temperature whats that? Thats a great question so lets get started Okay first off the Flex temperature is always referred to the takeoff performance setup for many jet powered airplanes except for Boeing They called it the assumed or derated temperature Okay in my example we will refer to an Airbus A320 with CFM turbofan jet engines Now many passengers have the impression that pilots always apply full power when performing a takeoff But do you remember the last time you sat in an Airbus that shortly after takeoff the engine sound decreased a little bit as if the power would drop Well thats due to the Flex temperature and the climb power setting So prior to every takeoff you have to perform the takeoff calculations taking many factors into account First and foremost the aircraft takeoff weight The ramp agent will hand

Gas flowing through a typical power plant turbine can be as hot as 2300 degrees F, but some of the critical metals in the turbine can withstand temperatures only as hot as 1500 to 1700 degrees F.
In a turbine engine, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), sometimes referred to as Turbine Outlet Temperature (TOT), is the temperature of the turbine exhaust gases as they leave the turbine unit.
An engine with degraded performance is less efficient and requires more fuel to produce the same thrust leading to an increase in EGT. A number of parameters can cause temporary performance degradation that will have an influence on EGT or there can be a progressive degradation of engine performance.
The most common method is using the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) gauge, which is the direct indicator of the fuel-to-air ratio in the engine. When you decide to start leaning the engine, pull the mixture back slowly. As the EGT temperature climbs, it will eventually slow down.
LOP requires that once you docHub peak EGT you continue to lean the mixtureusually 25 to 50 degrees F on the lean side for normally aspirated engines. There are timesvery high power settings for onewhen LOP can be harmful to an engine, but that doesnt mean it shouldnt be practiced at all.
EGT Margin (EGTM) is the difference between the peak EGT incurred during take‐off and the certified redline EGT. It is used to evaluate and track engine time on‐wing health. d. EGT margins (EGTM) are at their highest levels when the engines are new or just following refurbishment.
By contrast, high EGTs do not indicate that the engine is under excessive stress. They simply indicate that a lot of energy from the fuel is being wasted out the exhaust pipe rather than being extracted in the form of mechanical energy sent to the propeller. High EGTs do not represent a threat to engine longevity.
EGT Margin (EGTM) is the difference between the peak EGT incurred during take-off and the certified redline EGT. It is used to evaluate and track engine time on-wing health. EGT Redline.
In a turbine engine, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), sometimes referred to as Turbine Outlet Temperature (TOT), is the temperature of the turbine exhaust gases as they leave the turbine unit.
Peak EGT occurs when there is no excess air or fuel. The black band shown in Figure 4 for the lean side of peak EGT indicates how engines vary greatly in their ability to burn lean mixtures. Operating on the lean side of peak impacts the degree of leaning possible.
