whats up everyone thanks for joining me again this week today were gonna be talking about merge joins this is video number two in a three-part series on physical joint operators and sequel server Ill link to the other videos in the series below as they come out so go check those out but lets dive right in to merge joins today so merge joins are theoretically the fastest physical join operator available to us in sequel server the reason theyre so fast is that sequel server only has to iterate over each row in both of our inputs into our merge join a single time theres no going back and looping over things again like there would be an a nested loop Joyner and a hash joint the downside here though is that you only get that speed in emerg join because the inputs into it need to be sorted and that incoming data is sorted either because you already have it pre sorted in something like an index or because sequel server decides that theres a low enough cost that itll just sort the data
