Creating a secondary index causes Teradata Database to build a separate internal subtable to contain the index rows, thus adding another set of rows that requires updating each time a table row is inserted, deleted, or updated.
The primary index deteriorates performance only if the distribution is skewed. No maintenance is needed. A secondary index deteriorates performance because it is mapped in a sub table, which must be maintained with every UPDATE and INSERT statement. This means we should only create a secondary index if it is also used!
Indexes can help improve the performance of a nested-loop join in several ways. The biggest benefit often comes when you have a clustered index on the joining column in one of the tables. The presence of a clustered index on a join column frequently determines which table SQL Server chooses as the inner table.

Oracle defines two types of indexes: the B-Tree (Balanced Tree) Index and the Bitmap Index. B-Tree Index is the default Oracle index created whenever we use the CREATE INDEX command. It compiles a list of values divided into ranges and associates a key with a single row or range of rows.
In fact, GROUP BY is also a time-consuming task beside JOIN. Because MySQL uses only one index for each table in one execution, we need to decide using index for join or group by.
