hello and welcome to this quarters firebolt tech tips today were going to talk about join indexes lets jump right in so im going to look at a query this is a query thats joining the fact table to a dimension table so were going to run this query notice that were doing a where predicate on the dimension table were also grouping by that dimension table so you can tell this query is taking a fair amount of time to run which is quite unacceptable so 11.88 seconds so lets look at why that query ran that long so lets do an explain plan on it and lets take a look so the first thing you notice is the explain plan is actually doing an inner join from the fact table to the dimension table so you can tell were doing a left outer join here but because of the wear predicate firebolt is converting that to an inner join fireball always prefers outer joins compared to inner joints the other thing to note here is that we are using the aggregating index on the fact table so theres not a lo

JOIN INDEX is a materialized view. Its definition is permanently stored and the data is updated whenever the base tables referred in the join index is updated. JOIN INDEX may contain one or more tables and also contain pre-aggregated data. Join indexes are mainly used for improving the performance.
In fact, GROUP BY is also a time-consuming task beside JOIN. Because MySQL uses only one index for each table in one execution, we need to decide using index for join or group by. Let give GROUP BY a chance and see what happens. ing to the explain chart, MySQL will join `answer` table into `user` table.
Columns with one or more of the following characteristics are good candidates for indexing: Values are unique in the column, or there are few duplicates. There is a wide range of values (good for regular indexes). There is a small range of values (good for bitmap indexes).
Bitmap indexes are widely used in data warehousing environments. The environments typically have large amounts of data and ad hoc queries, but a low level of concurrent DML transactions.
Expression-based indexes efficiently evaluate queries with the indexed expression. Unique and non-unique indexes. ... Clustered and non-clustered indexes. ... Partitioned and nonpartitioned indexes. ... Bidirectional indexes. ... Expression-based indexes.
Indexes can help improve the performance of a nested-loop join in several ways. The biggest benefit often comes when you have a clustered index on the joining column in one of the tables. The presence of a clustered index on a join column frequently determines which table SQL Server chooses as the inner table.
The indexes must include all the join columns, in the same key order on both tables. A merge join on (col1, col2) can use indexes on (col1, col2) or (col2, col1) , but the key order must be the same for both tables.
Oracle defines two types of indexes: the B-Tree (Balanced Tree) Index and the Bitmap Index. B-Tree Index is the default Oracle index created whenever we use the CREATE INDEX command. It compiles a list of values divided into ranges and associates a key with a single row or range of rows.
An index join is a hash join of several indexes that together contain all the table columns that are referenced in the query. If an index join is used, then no table access is needed, because all the relevant column values can be retrieved from the indexes. An index join cannot be used to eliminate a sort operation.
A single-table join index is a database object created using the CREATE JOIN INDEX statement, but specifying only one table in its FROM clause. This permits you to hash some or all of the columns of a large replicated base table on a foreign key that hashes rows to the same AMP as another large table.
