welcome to tesselbytes where we serve you gis and smallbytes today well be covering arcgis pro using the join field geoprocessing tool so lets get started im looking at some unemployment census data in harris county texas or you may know houston im working with two pivot tables from the same sets of data on the left i have the track population total and on the right i have the unemployment total as well as the counts of how many blocks in each track what id like to do is combine these two so i can run some summary statistics id like to be able to calculate my percent of unemployment but i cant do that without my population per tract and while the field aliases for block groups may be different between the two tables they do have a unifying tract field and these tracks are unique so ill be joining on these two to better visualize the join field taken us to model builder and ive opened up the geoprocessing pane you can see here that theres join field join features and add join

The join will always reside in the layer, not with the data. To make a permanent join, either use the Join Field tool or use the joined layer as input to one of the following tools: Copy Features, Copy Rows, Export Features, or Export Table.
A table join appends all the columns from one table into the other table based on the unique ID. But a Table Relate creates an entirely new table. So when you select the record(s) in one table, it will create a temporary table based on all the matching unique IDs.
Merge can be done for multiple records in a single layer. Select the records in your attribute table (in this case all records that have "C") that you want to merge, then go to Editor > Merge.. and click OK from the resulting box.

You can also add attribute indexes using the Add Attribute Index tool. In ArcCatalog, click the shapefile or dBASE table to which you want to add an attribute index. Click the File menu and click Properties. Click the Index tab. Check an attribute to index its values. Uncheck an attribute to delete its index. Click OK.
Open the layer properties (double-click the layer) and click on the Joins tab in the left column. Click the green Addition symbol at the bottom of the dialog box. Change the Join layer to the standalone table and change the join and target fields to the fields that have a common geographic identifier. Click OK.
To join two datasets: In ArcMap,right-click the layer to which you want to join attributes, point to Joins and Relates, and click Join. To join two spatial datasets, click the first drop-down arrow and click Join data from another layer based on spatial location.
Joins versus relates You'll want to join two tables when the data in the tables has a one-to-one or a many-to-one relationship. You'll want to relate two tables when the data in the tables has a one-to-many or many-to-many relationship.
Joining a table to a shapefile allows a user to add additional attributes to a layer based on an ID field that is common to both the table and the layer's attribute table. Right click on the layer to which you want to join the table, and click on Joins and Relates > Join.
