Summary. Joins attributes from one layer to another based on spatial, temporal, or attribute relationships, or a combination of those relationships.
To make a permanent join, consider using the Join Field tool. Another way to make the join permanent is to save the joined feature layer to a new feature class or the joined table view to a new table.
To join two datasets: In ArcMap,right-click the layer to which you want to join attributes, point to Joins and Relates, and click Join. To join two spatial datasets, click the first drop-down arrow and click Join data from another layer based on spatial location.
The Join Features tool is designed to transfer and append information from one layer to another. The information that is transferred is based on the type of spatial relationship defined or based on a common attribute that is shared between the two datasets.
A relate or relationship class is recommended when using data where a one-to-many or many-to-many relationship exists. Unlike joining tables, relating tables defines a relationship between two tables. The associated data isn't appended to the layer's attribute table like it is with a join.
Usage. A spatial join matches rows from the Join Features values to the Target Features values based on their relative spatial locations. By default, all attributes of the join features are appended to attributes of the target features and copied to the output feature class.
Joins versus relates You'll want to join two tables when the data in the tables has a one-to-one or a many-to-one relationship. You'll want to relate two tables when the data in the tables has a one-to-many or many-to-many relationship.
Fields of different number formats can be joined as long as the values are equal. For example, a field of type float can be joined to a short integer field. The Input Join Field and the Output Join Field can have different names.
Usage notes. The Join Features tool is designed to transfer and append information from one layer to another. The information that is transferred is based on the type of spatial relationship defined or based on a common attribute that is shared between the two datasets.
A table join appends all the columns from one table into the other table based on the unique ID. But a Table Relate creates an entirely new table. So when you select the record(s) in one table, it will create a temporary table based on all the matching unique IDs.
