Scatter plots are similar to line graphs in that they start with mapping quantitative data points. The difference is that with a scatter plot, the decision is made that the individual points should not be connected directly together with a line but, instead express a trend.
A connected scatterplot displays the evolution of a numeric variable. Data points are represented by a dot and connected by straight line segments. It often shows a trend in data over intervals of time: a time series.
Step 1: Highlight the first two rows of the data (column headings and one row of data) and select Insert Charts|Column Chart and select the Clustered Column option. The result is shown in Figure 1. Step 2: We next click on the chart and so Charting Tools appears in the ribbon. Now select Design Data|Select Data.
Avoid a scatter plot when you have too large a set of data. When you have so much data in your scatter plot that it clogs up the entire graph, this is the result of overplotting. As another example, take a look at the scatter plot below.
To connect the dots also called bubbles of your scatterplot with each other, you can use the powerful Datawrapper feature Add custom areas and lines (experimental) that you can find in the Annotate tab. Its called experimental because it doesnt (yet) come with an easy to use interface.
Sometimes we plot points that dont make a perfect pattern or that have no values in between. This is called discrete data and we dont connect the dots with a line. They just stay as a scatter plot. A discrete graph is one with scattered points.
