You can create as many stacks as you want by dragging folders to the right side of your Dock. You can change how a stack appears by right-clicking or control-clicking its icon in the Dock.
On your Mac, use Desktop Dock settings to change the appearance of the Dock, and to select items to show in the menu bar and in Control Center. To change these settings, choose Apple menu System Settings, then click Desktop Dock in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
The Anatomy of the Dock The Dock contains two to three sections, separated by lines or separators. The leftmost side contains all the apps youve added to the Dock. Moving right, past the first separator, it shows up to three recently used apps that arent saved in the Dock already.
On your Mac, do any of the following: Add an item to the Dock: Drag apps to the left side of (or above) the line that separates the recently used apps. Remove an item from the Dock: Drag the item out of the Dock until Remove is shown. Rearrange items in the Dock: Drag an item to a new location.
On your Dock, youll see that some apps have dots underneath them. The dots indicate that these apps are running right now. Even if you click the little red button in the top-left corner of a window, the app might keep running in the background if its beneficial to do so, like with an email app.
Add Spacers in the macOS Dock Open Terminal. Open your favorite Terminal application. Choose spacer size. You can add a regular spacer or a small spacer. Copy and paste one of the scripts into your Terminal. Move the spacer(s). Drag and drop the spacer(s) to the desired location on your dock.
The dot under the application icon in the Dock of macOS means that the app is actively running at that moment.
Tip. You can get rid of that running program indicator dot, if you like. Open System PreferencesDock and turn off Show indicators for open applications.
