What to Include in a Letter of Recommendation Salutation of one line. One paragraph detailing how you know the person and why you are qualified. One paragraph explaining why you recommend the person and details on what theyve done or accomplished. One summary reinforcing that you highly recommend the person.
Concentrate on several different aspects of the applicant. Specifically identify his/her skills, attitudes, personal attributes and growth, as well as his/her contributions to and performance within your organization. It is extremely important to include examples where possible.
The letter of recommendation should give a picture of the candidates personal characteristics, performance and experience, strengths, capabilities, and professional promise from someone who has worked closely with the candidate. The selection committee relies on these letters to assist in making a final decision.
They do this by invoking the linguistic terms mentioned above: standout terms or phrases, such as unparalleled, one of the best I have worked with, incredible, fantastic, prodigy, unrivaled, outstanding, rising star, as good or better than (a well-known person), amazing, and others.
Communication skills (writing skills, oral articulateness) Personal qualities (industry, self-discipline, motivation, maturity, initiative, flexibility, leadership qualities, team working skills, perseverance, energy, competitiveness) Suitability for graduate study or profession.
Offer specific examples of skills or qualifications that match the role. Anecdote or example: Include a personal anecdote about what its like to work with the candidate. Include any workplace or people skills youve observed them to possess. Closing: Give an overview of why youd recommend this person.
Summary: A letter of recommendation aims to show the admissions board how the candidate is qualified for the leadership program. To do this, its important to summarize the candidates credentials so the staff members can see why youre recommending them.
