The United States Coast Guard (USCG) provides the guidelines for transferring ownership of a documented vessel. Both current and prior owners must fill out a new registration card (also known as Transfer Form CG-1270). A bill of sale must be accompanied by documentation that you own the vessel you are selling.
U.S. Coast Guard Vessel Documentation is a national form of boat registration. Documented vessels do not have titles; they maintain Certificates of Documentation that expire in 1-5 years from issuance.
CG-1270 CERTIFICATE OF DOCUMENTATION: Interest in a vessel may be transferred by the last documented owner(s) on the reverse of the original OR copy of the Certificate of Documentation.
The Transfer of Ownership Form CG-1258 is utilized when: Purchasing/transferring a vessel: When the sale is finalized you may complete a U.S. Coast Guard Bill of Sale (CG-1340). If there is an outstanding mortgage, the mortgagee (lender) should complete a Satisfaction of Mortgage.
United States Coast Guard Documented vessels must use form CG-1340 to complete a Bill of Sale in order to transfer ownership or to sell a percentage of the Documented Vessel, if they are not using the back page of the CG-1270 Certificate of Documentation.
Documentation creates a clear chain of ownership. This makes owning a maritime vessel much simpler and more transparent. It ensures that buyers and lenders are aware of possible liens before purchase. Relatedly, documentation also comes with an official number designation from the Coast Guard.
This document is issued to a ship and signifies that the carrier and its shipboard management operate in ance with the approved safety and environmental protection policy.
