So imagine that you have a school report that youre working on, or maybe youre turning in a project for work, and youve got lots of pages and lots of sections in there. Well, a table of contents can make it easier to get back to the content that people want to refer back to. So how do you do that? Its actually easier than you think. And Ive pulled up a sample school report here. I know Ive been out of school for a little while, but brings back memories when I jump into this. Lets jump on my PC and Ill show you how to do this. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Multilevel List. Click a chapter-numbering list definition (one that includes the text Heading 1 or Chapter 1).
Grouping objects Hold the Shift (or Ctrl) key and click the objects you want to group. Click the Group command on the Format tab, then select Group. The selected objects will now be grouped.
Continuing or Restarting Numbered lists Right click on top of the number 1 next to the word Brouhaha. Select Continue Numbering.
Group shapes, pictures, or objects Press and hold CTRL while you select the shapes, pictures, or objects that you want to group. The Wrap Text option for each object must be other than In line with Text. Go to Drawing Tools or Picture Tools, on the Format tab, in the Arrange group, select Group. , and then select Group.
Connect text boxes Click Home Draw Text Box, and drag the cross shaped cursor to draw a box where you want text. Click in the text box you want as the first text box in the story. The Group button is unavailable Make sure you have multiple shapes or pictures selected. If your selection includes a table, worksheet, or GIF image, the Group button will not be available.
Note: If the Group button is unavailable, verify that you have more than one object selected. If you cant select an additional object, verify that none of the objects that you want to add to the group has Word Wrap set to In Line with Text.

Copy the text of the individual documents, but NOT the reference list. Paste the text from the individual documents into the new blank document.
Click where you want to insert the new chapter heading and insert a page break (see Section and Page Breaks). In the Styles Pane, click Heading 1 style. The word Chapter and the chapter number will appear. Click after the chapter number and enter the text for the chapter heading.
