Hi everyone. My name is Rebecca Bentley and I am an associate here at Berardi Immigration Law. Today I want to talk about recent trends regarding the adjudication of employment authorization requests from non-citizens seeking to adjust their status in the US. Generally, once an individual has filed Form I-485 to adjust their status to that of a lawful permanent resident, the next step is to apply for employment authorization by filing form I-765 and to apply for advance parole travel authorization by filing Form I-131. It is common practice to apply for both employment authorization and advance parole at the same time. When an applicant requests both employment authorization and advance parole together, USCIS has been known to issue something called combination cards that include both employment and travel authorization in one document. This is no longer the common practice. Due to astronomical processing times for employment authorization in light of the COVID 19 pandemic, recent tren

Identity theft is a concern, and you should carefully guard access to this number. Scammers could ask for SSN as part of a job application. Even an employer with a legitimate need for your SSN (for a background check, for example) should not collect this on an application form.
With the rise of identity theft, it makes sense to be cautious when giving out your Social Security number. If the employer says giving your Social Security number is optional, you can simply choose not to give it. If it is required on the application, you can still choose not to list it if thats possible.
How to fill out a job application Read the application before filling it out. Take your time. Answer completely and truthfully. Include your resume. Fill out job information chronologically. Put in the extra effort. Research your salary.
Why do employers need my social security number? If an employer decides to extend you an offer, they will eventually need your social security number to verify your identity and work authorization and perhaps to complete a background check.
How to structure an effective job application form Name of applicant. Contact information (phone and email) Education. Work experience. Professional references (optional) Availability (e.g., weekends, night shift) Applicants signature and date.
As a general practice, employers should request a SSN from an applicant only when absolutely necessary. For example, when conducting a background check before an offer of employment, an employer can collect a SSN on a separate background check authorization form rather than the employment application.
Every employer needs a copy of your social security card for tax and (as the name implies) social security purposes. They cant pay you without one. Not only is it not illegal, they are actually required to collect this information.
