Merging Shapefiles in ArcGIS Desktop Add two or more shapefiles in ArcGIS Desktop. Select Geoprocessing. Select Merge. See Merge Tool screen. Add the two or more shapefiles in Input Datasets. Save the Output Dataset. Name the Output shapefile. Press OK.
Answer. Joining a table to a shapefile allows a user to add additional attributes to a layer based on an ID field that is common to both the table and the layers attribute table. Right click on the layer to which you want to join the table, and click on Joins and Relates Join.
Right-Click method: Perform a join by right clicking in the Table of Contents on the name of the layer that you want to add data to and look for the Joins Relates option. This opens the Join Data dialog box. Choose the option to join based on location.
Join by location or spatial join uses spatial associations between the layers involved to append fields from one layer to another. Spatial joins are different from attribute and relationship class joins in that they are not dynamic and require the results to be saved to a new output layer.
When you join two tables, you append the attributes from one onto the other based on a field common to both. Relating tables defines a relationship between two tablesalso based on a common fieldbut doesnt append the attributes of one to the other; instead, you can access the related data when necessary.
In ArcMap,right-click the layer to which you want to join attributes, point to Joins and Relates, and click Join. To join two spatial datasets, click the first drop-down arrow and click Join data from another layer based on spatial location.
When performing an attribute join, the joined fields are dynamically added to the existing table. Field propertiessuch as aliases, visibility, and number formattingare maintained when a join is added or removed.
Merge can be done for multiple records in a single layer. Select the records in your attribute table (in this case all records that have C) that you want to merge, then go to Editor Merge.. and click OK from the resulting box.
