To make text italics in HTML, use the HTML tag or and close the tag with or . Output: This is italicized text using the em tag.
The lack of italics for the Bible and its books probably has less to do with divine inspiration than with the fact that the word bible comes from Greek biblia, meaning books. The Bible, then, is the proper name for a special set of books rather than the formal title of a publication.
Italics and bold are great for emphasizing keywords or points in a document but are not always accessible. First, by default, screen reading programs will not inform the user of any words in bold or italics; therefore, this group of users could miss important information or context.
The titles of other works, such as short stories, essays, songs, and short poems are enclosed in quotation marks. Do not italicize the Bible, titles of books in the Bible (Genesis, not Genesis), or titles of legal documents (the Constitution, not the Constitution).
The Bible, books within it, versions of it, and other sacred writings are the exceptions to the rule: these are books you do not underline or italicize (New Testament, not New Testament; Koran, not Koran).
Use only as an adjective, not as a noun. Dont use italics or italicized. To make the selected characters italic, select Ctrl+I.
Parenthetical Citations: The first time you reference a version of the Bible, in the in-text citations, give the name of the edition (italicized), followed by a comma and the abbreviated book (see back of handout), chapter, and verse. Use a period, not a colon, between the chapter and verse: John 3.16.
General Guidelines: Versions of the Bible or individual books are not underlined, italicized, or placed in quotation marks.
