Italic font, or italics, is a style of typeface in which the text appears slanted, like this. While italics are mainly used to draw attention to certain words or passages, the font also plays an important role in differentiating the titles and names of thingssuch as novels, movies, and even spaceshipsfrom other text.
Italics are designed to emphasise certain words in written text. Tonally, they can be used to reflect a change in intonation, highlight contrast or even to denote sarcasm.
Frequently used shortcuts To do thisPress Apply italic formatting to text. Ctrl+I Apply underline formatting to text. Ctrl+U Decrease the font size by 1 point. Ctrl+Left bracket ([) Increase the font size by 1 point. Ctrl+Right bracket (])18 more rows
Italic is a type style thats almost always slanted and is designed to create emphasis in text. Originally based on semi-cursive forms, italics are a direct contrast to the upright style.
To make the selected characters italic, select Ctrl+I. The characters are displayed in italic type.
In most cases, you should italicize the titles of complete works, like books: The Great Gatsby, Beloved, and The Catcher in the Rye. You would also italicize the names of feature-length films, like Rocky, Schindlers List, and Frozen.
Open the Word document, and select the text you want to format. To bold the selected text, press the Ctrl key and the B key simultaneously on your keyboard. To put the selected text in italics, press the Ctrl + I keys.
Remember that italic lettering has a slight slant, so the bottom curve of these letters should be positioned a little further to the left than the top curve. That is decided when you make the first stroke. Draw it to fit an imaginary slanting line. After drawing that first curve, c has a short, quite straight top.
