When the species within a given genus cannot or does not need to be identified in a sentence, it can be replaced with sp. If you are referring to multiple species of the same genus, spp. can be used. These abbreviations should not be italicized.
The normal font is what your character says verbatim, ie word for word. Italics usually either means internal thoughts, a synopsys of what your character says, or contemplating an action (like check to see if this person is being truthful). Those last ones will usually have a skill check tag.
The sp./spp. abbreviations are never capitalized or italicized, although the preceding genus name is. A full stop/period is always placed after these abbreviations unless it is used at the end of a sentence and would result in a double full stop/period.
Most commonly, italics are used for emphasis or contrast that is, to draw attention to some particular part of a text. Here are some examples: The Battle of New Orleans was fought in January 1815, two weeks after the peace treaty had been signed.
Occasionally the abbreviation sp. or spp. may be used following the genus name, meaning species or species plural respectively. For example, Wuchereria spp. is used to refer to more than one Wuchereria species. The sp./spp. abbreviations are never capitalized or italicized, although the preceding genus name is.
In these cases, use your best judgment about the use of italics. Per changes by IUPAC in 2003, do not italicize the first three letters of restriction enzymes (EcoRI, BamHI).
Plant and animal scientific names should be italicized except for the abbreviations ssp., var., sp., x, and placeholder number.
A trivial name should neiter be written with capital first letter nor in italic. Examples of trivial names are: lactobacilli, mycobacteria, salmonella, staphylococci and streptococci.
