Hi, Im Erica Gamet with InDesign Secrets. In this video, Im going to show you a quick way to italicize text thats currently inside quotation marks. And Im going to show you how to automate that process using the Find/Change dialog box and the power of GREP. Now before you get too scared Im going to show you that GREP really isnt that scary and that it can also make your job much easier. In this paragraph we have some quoted text that should be in italics. So lets go to the Find/Change dialog box using Command- or Control-F. And were going to click on the GREP tab and enter what were looking for in the Find What field. Now with GREP we dont need to know specific text like we would inside the text tab, just the type of text were looking for. In this case, we know that were looking for some opening quotes, followed by some text, followed by closing quotes. InDesign has a secret menu where the GREP expressions are hidden. (Emphasis in original) This phrase is used inside the in-text citation to indicate that the word/s in italics were emphasised in the source. For example: Novick (2012, p. 379, emphasis in original) refers to a previous proof known as allowable sequences of permutation.
Generally, shorter works (poems, song titles, chapters) go in quotation marks, and longer works (movies, books, newspaper titles) are italicized. o Books are italicized, but a chapter inside a book is in quotation marks. o The name of a TV show is italicized, but a specific episode is in quotation marks.
Use the title and the year of publication. If the title is italicized in the reference list, also italicize it in the in-text citation. If the title is not italicized in the reference list, use double quotation marks around the title.
Use italics for titles of books, newspapers, magazines, and journals. Italicize the volume number for journal citations.
If the title in the Works Cited list is in italics, italicize the words from the title in the in-text citation. If the title in the Works Cited list is in quotation marks, put quotation marks around the words from the title in the in-text citation.
Titles of books and reports are italicized or underlined; titles of articles and chapters are in quotation marks.
APA Style (7th ed.) Immediately after the italicized words, insert emphasis added within square brackets as follows: [emphasis added] (APA, 2020, p. 275). For example, They [the judges] were convinced that the swimmer had missed the two-handed [emphasis added] turn.
In writing the titles of newspapers, do not italicize the word the, even when it is part of the title (the New York Times), and do not italicize the name of the city in which the newspaper is published unless that name is part of the title: the Hartford Courant, but the London Times.
