Simply enclose the text between double asterisk ( **text** ) or two underscores ( text ) to bold text. To italicise text, use single asterisks ( *text* ) or underscores ( text ) before and after the text.
To make the selected characters italic, select Ctrl+I. The characters are displayed in italic type.
To make a text italic is straightforward, use the \emph or \textit command: Some of the greatest discoveries in science were made by \emph{accident}.

Of course you can use Greek letters. But do not italicize them. Note that the psi () and pi () are not italicized, but t and e are.
