Saving in Microsoft Excel Open a . CSV document in Microsoft Excel. Click File. Select Save As... Select File Type as CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) (. csv). Click Save. If prompted, choose Keep Current Format.
While a CSV file cannot contain font information, it can, in principle, be in any text encoding1. So, in principle, your CSV file could be saved in a Unicode encoding, such as UTF-8 or UTF-16.
Open an CSV file using the Text Import Wizard Make sure the data type is set to Delimited. Click Next. Set the delimiter to Comma (only), and deselect Tab. Click Next. For each column, set the data format to Text, instead of General. To do this quickly, you can select all the columns at once.
There are no specified limits of what characters can be used in a CSV file. What limits you is how your file is encoded. If you recall from our article on choosing the right encoding, UTF-8 is the recommended file encoding, due to its vast support of just about any character possible.

By default, the escape character is a " (double quote) for CSV-formatted files. If you want to use a different escape character, use the ESCAPE clause of COPY , CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE or gpload to declare a different escape character.
Valid characters are uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), period (.), apostrophe ('), hyphen/dash (-), and spaces. No other characters are allowed. The first character must be a letter.
