Use quotation marks to enclose direct quotes and the titles of short works. Use italics for the titles of long works and foreign words.
If you want to emphasize a word or phrase in a quote, italicize it and include the words emphasis added in square brackets. Example: Italicizing for emphasis In the view of Anderson (2017), the results reflected global patterns [emphasis added] (p. 17).
Most commonly, italics are used for emphasis or contrast that is, to draw attention to some particular part of a text. Here are some examples: The Battle of New Orleans was fought in January 1815, two weeks after the peace treaty had been signed.
Titles of full works like books or newspapers should be italicized. Titles of short works like poems, articles, short stories, or chapters should be put in quotation marks. Titles of books that form a larger body of work may be put in quotation marks if the name of the book series is italicized.
Owing to the influence from calligraphy, italics normally slant slightly to the right, like so. Different glyph shapes from roman type are usually used another influence from calligraphy and upper-case letters may have swashes, flourishes inspired by ornate calligraphy.
This is the standard way of representing emphasis or contrast; you should not try to use quotation marks or other punctuation marks for this purpose. Another use of italics is to cite titles of complete works: books, films, journals, musical compositions, and so on: We saw a performance of the Messiah on Saturday.
To italicize text, add one asterisk or underscore before and after a word or phrase. To italicize the middle of a word for emphasis, add one asterisk without spaces around the letters.
When should italics not be used? Italics should not be used for the titles of short works, such as poems, articles, short stories, or song namesall of which use quotation marks instead. The names of geographic locations and religious texts use neither italics nor quotes, but theyre still capitalized.
